THE GREATIST RECORDINGS OF ALL TIME

24."IT DON'T COME EASY"-RINGO STARR

WITH A CHORD PROGRESSION AND ELECTRIC GUITAR FLAT-PICKING
RIFF MUCH LIKE THE ONE FOUND IN ERIC CLAPTON'S "LET IT RAIN" THIS
VERY CATCHY SONG ALSO CONTAINS A MESSAGE WHICH NEARLY EVERY
MUSICIAN CAN RELATE TOO.EVEN FOR THE BEATLES-IT DIDN'T COME EASY.
IT'S EASY TO FORGET NOW THAT THE BEATLES WERE TURNED DOWN BY
EVERY LABEL IN LONDON IN 1963 AND THAT IT WAS ONLY THE PERSISTANCE
OF THIER VERY LOYAL MANAGER:BRIAN EPSTIEN AND AN EXTRODINARILY
LUCKY REFERAL TO PRODUCER GEORGE MARTIN,WHO OVERRODE E.M.I.'S
REJECTION OF THE BEATLES AND MADE THE DEAL HAPPEN.
PROBABLY THE BEST SONG TO EVER COME RINGO'S WAY AND
ONE OF THE BEST SINGLE'S RELEASED BY A SOLO BEATLE-"IT DON'T COME
EASY" IS A CLASSIC ROCK SONG WITH A BIG PRODUCTION THAT STILL
PUT'S RINGO'S OPTIMISM AND MUSICAL TALENT CENTER STAGE-
WHERE IT BELONG'S.

THE GREATIST RECORDINGS OF ALL TIME

23."THE TEARS OF A CLOWN"-SMOKEY ROBINSON & THE MIRACLES

"TEARS" WAS ONE OF THE LAST BIG HITS SMOKEY ROBINSON HAD WITH THE
MIRACLES BEFORE HE LEFT TO PURSUE A SOLO CAREER.A BIG INFLUENCE
ON THE BEATLES-IT'S EASY TO SEE WHY IN THIS SONG IN WHICH THE LYRICS
DOWN MESSAGE IS COMPLETLY CONCEALED BY THE EXTRODINARYLY UP-
BEAT MUSIC.RECORDED IN 1965 BUT NOT RELEASED UNTIL 1969,THE PICCALO
RIFF IN "TEARS" PRE-DATES A SIMALAR USE OF CLASSICAL INSTRUMENTATION
IN THE BEATLES "PENNY LANE" BY TWO YEARS.
OF ALL THE GREAT ARTISTS AT MOTOWN SMOKEY MAY HAVE BEEN THE BUSIESTAND MOST INFLUENTIAL.AS A PRODUCER,COMPOSER AND SINGER HE WAS
PROBABLY INVOLVED IN MORE OF MOTOWNS HIT-MAKING PROJECTS THAN
ANY OTHER MOTOWN ARTIST.TO SAY HE WAS A VISIONARY WOULD BE
UNDERSTATMENT.TO SAY THAT HE WAS A MASTER OF PRODUCTION,
COMPOSITION,AND PERFORMANCE WOULD BE A STATEMENT OF FACT.

THE GREATIST RECORDINGS OF ALL TIME

22."WOODSTOCK IMPROVASATION"-JIMI HENDRIX{GYPSY.SUN & RAINBOWS}

FOR ALL OF THE IMPRACTICAL IDEALISM THAT EMERGED IN THE 1960'S
IT DID,AT LEAST,PRODUCE A GREAT AMOUNT OF ABOVE AVERAGE MUSIC.
ONE PLAYER EMERGED AS THE MOST TALENTED AND INNOVATIVE
ROCK GUITARIST OF ALL TIME AND IT'S HARD TO PICTURE HIM BEING
ABLE TO REACH SUCH A LARGE AUDIENCE AT ANY OTHER TIME IN
MUSIC HISTORY.
MOST OF THE RECORDINGS THAT HENDRIX LEFT BEHIND ARE ROCK
SONGS THAT ARE EXTRODINARILY CREATIVE AND CONTAIN GUITAR
PLAYING AND SOUND MANIPULATION THAT DEFIES ANY STANDARD
DESCRIPTIVE WORDS TO TRY AND EXPLAIN WHAT THEY DO IN TERMS
OF EXPANDING JUST WHAT WAS POSSIBLE ON THE ELECTRIC GUITAR
AND IN COMPOSITION FOR IT-BOTH IN TERMS OF MUSIC AND LYRICS.
HENDRIX WAS SO AMAZING AS AN ELECTRIC GUITAR PLAYER THAT
HIS AWE INSPIRING COMPOSITIONAL SKILLS TEND TO GET OVERLOOKED.
BECAUSE HE WAS SO GOOD AT COMPOSING WE ONLY GOT ONE
CHANCE TO SEE HENDRIX CUT COMPLETLY LOOSE-AND IMPROVISE
FOR A GOOD FIVE MINUTES OR SO-HERE ON THIS TRACK RECORDED
AT WOODSTOCK.IT'S LIKE NOTHING ELSE IN JIMI'S CATOLOG.IN A
RELATIVLY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME HE NAVAGATES EVERY STYLE
OF MUSIC EVER KNOWN TO MAN AND THREADS IT ALL TOGETHER
WITH THE GRACE AND BRILLIANCE THAT ONLY A TRUE MASTER
COULD REALIZE.JIMI HENDRIX WAS NOT ONLY EXPIERIENCED.
HE WAS THE EXPIERIENCE.

THE GREATIST RECORDINGS OF ALL TIME

21."WILD THING"-THE TROGG'S

COMING OUT AT A TIME WHEN POP/ROCK MUSIC WAS GETTING
A BIT MORE COMPLEX THIS ULTRA-PRIMATIVE APPROACH CAME
AS A JOLT TO THE SENSES.WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT
USING SUCH A PRIMATIVE SONG STRUCTURE COULD GIVE A SONG
MORE POWER?
EVEN THOUGH THE LYRICS WERE AS INNOCENT AS COULD BE
IT WAS THE WAY THEY WERE SUNG THAT MADE THEM APPEAR TO
TO BE RISQUE.A LITERAL READING WOULD PROVE THEM NO MORE THAN
AN INNOCENT NURSERY RHYME BUT THE MUSIC AND THE COOL
SINGING WERE MORE THAN THE SUM OF THIER PARTS.THE WOODEN
FLUTE BREAK ALSO MADE THE SONG VERY UNIQUE.
AS ONE BRITISH MUSICIAN PUT IT AT THE TIME-"THEY ARE SO
FAR BEHIND,THEY'RE AHEAD".

THE GREATIST RECORDINGS OF ALL TIME

20. "LIGHT MY FIRE"-THE DOORS

IN THE MID-SIXTIES,WITH ALL IT'S "PEACE AND LOVE" SLOGANERING;

ALONG CAME A BAND OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FILM STUDENTS,

WHOSE VIEW OF LIFE AND LOVE SEEMED MUCH MORE SERIOUS,

DEEPER,AND DARKER.

THEY ALSO SEEMED MORE INTENT ON BREAKING THRU *"THE

DOORS OF PERCEPTION" NO MATTER HOW DANGEROUS ANY ATTEMPTS

AT DOING SO MIGHT BECOME.THAT VERY DANGER WAS VERY MUCH

A PART OF "THE DOORS" ALURE.WHEN JIM MORRISON SANG "THE TIME

TO HESITATE IS THRU" LIKE IT OR NOT THE WORLD WAS LISTENING

AND SEEMED TO AGREE WITH HIM.

THE GREATIST RECORDINGS OF ALL TIME

19."SHEENA IS A PUNK ROCKER"-THE RAMONES

THE STORY OF THE RAMONES IS ONE OF THE MOST REMARKABLE

IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF ROCK.FOUR GUYS FROM QUEENS,NEW

YORK STRIP ROCK DOWN TO IT'S BASIC ELEMENTS,CRANK IT UP LOUD,

AND PLAY AT BREAK-NECK TEMPO'S.THEY ALL WEAR THE SAME

CLOTHES,BLACK LEATHER JACKETS,T-SHIRTS,JEANS AND TENNIS

SHOES AND SHARE THE SAME LAST NAME.

THE BASS PLAYER WRITES ALL THE SONGS WHICH HAVE SIMPLE

TITLES LIKE-"I JUST WANNA HAVE SOMETHING TO DO" AND "I DON'T

WANNA WALK AROUND WITH YOU".

THEY TOUR ENGLAND IN 1976-77 AND JUST LIKE BUDDY HOLLY AND THE

CRICKETS DID THEY INSPIRE HUNDREDS OF BRITISH YOUTH TO EMULATE

THIER SOUND.A FEW OF US IN AMERICA ARE SIMULARLY INSPIRED AND DO
THE SAME.THE REST,AS THEY SAY, IS HISTORY.

18."SHAPES OF THINGS-THE YARDBYRDS

"SHAPES OF THINGS" CAME OUT YEARS AHEAD OF IT'S

TIME.IT SEEMED TO DEFY THE ORDINARY LIMITATIONS

OF POP/ROCK MUSIC IN EVERY CONCIEVABLE WAY.IT

WAS A SONG THAT QUESTIONED EVERYTHING ! WILL

TIME MAKE MAN MORE WISE? WE JUST DIDN'T KNOW.

THE QUESTION CAUGHT US OFF GUARD AND SO GRABBED

OUR ATTENTION.

THAT ATTENTION WAS THEN EXPOSED TO THE MOST

MIND-BLOWING GUITAR SOLO ANYONE HAD EVER HEARD.

FILLED WITH DISTORTION AND FEEDBACK JEFF BECK REELED

OFF A MODAL SCALE OF NOTES SO UNIQUE AND PERFECT

-ALL YOU COULD DO WAS SAY WOW ! AND WAIT FOR THE

NEXT TIME IT GOT PLAYED.

THE GREATIST RECORDINGS OF ALL TIME

17."LADY STARDUST"-DAVID BOWIE

"IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A GREAT ALBUM YOU'VE GOT TO SIT DOWN
AND REALLY WORK AT WRITING SOME GREAT SONGS"-SO SAID
DAVID BOWIE AFTER RELEASING HIS MAGNUM OPUS "ZIGGY STARDUST"*.
AT TIMES IN THE ALBUM BOWIE SPEAKS FOR THE FICTICOUS CHARACTOR
"ZIGGY" BUT AT OTHERS HE ALSO SPEAKS FOR ZIGGY'S EXTREMLY-
PASSIONATE FANS ".......OHHH HOW I SIGHED,WHEN THEY ASKED IF I KNEW
HIS NAME" BOWIE SINGS AFTER-"THE BOY IN THE BRIGHT BLUE JEANS,
JUMPED UP ON THE STAGE !".HE SEE'S AND DESCRIBES THE ANDROGYNOUS
ROCK SUPERSTAR FROM EVERY ANGLE-WITH COMPOSITIONS SO
BRILLIANT THAT THEY DEFY THE CONVENTIONS OF WHAT IS USUALLY
POSSIBLE IN A THREE MINUTE POP SONG."LADY STARDUST" IS AN
EXSTENSION OF THOSE BOUNDRIES AND IT SHOWED THE WAY TO
POSSIBILITY'S IN ROCK MUSIC THAT NO ONE PREVIOUSLY HAD THOUGHT
OF.

*The full title of the album is "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust
and the Spiders from Mars".

16. "KANSAS CITY/HEY,HEY,HEY,HEY-THE BEATLES

THIS IS PROBABLY THE CLOSEST THING IN THE BEATLES SONG CATOLOG
TO WHAT IT WOULD HAVE SOUNDED LIKE TO HEAR THE BEATLES
IN HAMBURG,GERMANY AT THE STAR CLUB OR IN LIVERPOOL AT
"THE CAVERN".SOMEWHERE BACK IN THOSE EARLY DAY'S THE
BEATLE'S CAME UP WITH THIS MEDLEY OF LIEBER/STOLLER'S
"KANSAS CITY" AND LITTLE RICHARDS "HEY,HEY,HEY,HEY".THEY
PLAYED IT OFTEN AND IT WAS A CROWD FAVORITE.IT WAS ALSO
ONE OF THE LAST COVER SONGS THE BEATLES RECORDED APPEARING
ON THIER THIRD ALBUM "BEATLES FOR SALE".WITH McCARTNEY
LEADING THE VOCAL CHARGE AND THE BAND ROCKING HARD
BEHIND HIM-LEADING INTO ONE OF GEORGE'S BEST EARLY GUITAR
SOLO'S AND FINALLY SEGUING INTO THE LITTLE RICHARD SONG
WITH IT'S CALL AND RESPONSE VOCAL ALTERNATIONS IT'S JUST
A LITTLE OVER 2 MINUTES OF SOME OF THE BEST STRAIGHT AHEAD
ROCK N' ROLL OF ALL TIME.

THE GREATIST RECORDINGS OF ALL TIME

15. "BANG A GONG"-T-REX

IN MUSIC,LITERATURE,ART OR FILM VERY FEW PEOPLE CREATE A
COMPLETELY NEW GENRE.EDGAR ALLEN POE DID IT WHEN HE BECAME THE
FIRST HORROR WRITER AND MARC BOLAN{AKA-T-REX} DID IT WHEN HE
INVENTED GLAM ROCK.THOU THE GLAM ROCK PERIOD DID NOT LAST
LONG;THE EFFECTS OF IT SEEMED TO PERMANTLY CHANGE ROCK MUSIC.
IT SPAWNED A PLETHORA OF GREAT ARTISTS FROM "DAVID BOWIE" TO
"MOTT THE HOOPLE"-AS WELL AS ESTABLISHED ARTISTS WHO TOOK ON
IT'S PERSONA AND THRIVED SUCH AS LOU REED,ELTON JOHN,IGGY POP
[OF THE STOOGE'S} AND DAVID ESSEX.
ALL OF THE HAIRBANDS OF THE EIGHTIES OWE THIER ORIGINS TO
BOLAN YET NONE HAD THE GENUIS THAT BOLAN,BOWIE AND IAN
HUNTER OF MOTT THE HOOPLE POSSESSED.
IT'S HARD TO CONCIEVE OF HOW THE FORMER FOLKIE BOLAN MADE
THE "WILD MUTATION"* TO GLAM ROCK STAR KING-BUT THERE'S NO DOUBT
ABOUT IT.HE WAS THE ORIGINAL INNOVATER OF GLAM ROCK AND EVERY
ONE ELSE JUST FOLLOWED.

14. "A WHITER SHADE OF PALE"-PROCAL HARUM

BASED ON BACH'S "SLEEPERS AWAKE" AND "AIR ON A G STRING"
THOU NOT EXACTLY LIKE EITHER;PROCAL HARUM'S AUDACIOUS
SONG STAYED AT THE #1 POSITION ON THE BRITISH POP CHARTS FOR
SIX WEEKS.IN AMERICA IT REACHED #5 AND SOLD OVER A MILLION
COPIES{PLATINUM}.
WITH IT'S HAUNTING ORGAN MELODY AND ULTRA-TRIPPY LYRICS
"PALE" WAS THE PERFECT SONG FOR THE PEAK YEAR OF PSYCHADELICA;
1967.IT'S THE MOST PLAYED SONG ON BRITISH RADIO OF ALL TIME AND
OVER 800 ARTISTS HAVE RECORDED COVER VERSIONS OF THE SONG-
WHICH MUST BE SOME KIND OF RECORD.THERE IS NO OTHER SONG
EITHER BEFORE OR AFTER "PALE" THAT EVEN REMOTLY RESEMBLES
IT.IT'S A "ONE OF A KIND" SONG THAT ONCE HEARD IS UNFORGETABLE.

13 Commonalities:American Book's 1800's-1900's

Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" and Mark Twain's
"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn"

by Pete Holly

1.Both books take place in America
2.Both center on two main characters and
the complex relationship between them.
3.Both books revolve around events expierienced
during travel.
4.Both books were and are described as trash by some
and genuis by others.
5.Both books sidestep traditional christian values in
favor of alternative beliefs-yet neither totally eschews
christianity,in fact there are strong christian elements in
both{truth tellin' and such}.
6.The path is clear in both-it's either the "The River" or
"The Road".
7.Neither book's have tight neat endings but leave the door
open for more adventure's.
8.Both book's portray differances between "City Folk"
those of the country.
9.Both dis-regard the traditional begining,middle and end
approach for a much more expansive and entertaining
yarn style.
10.Both book's were based on real people and mostly true events.
11.Both book's stretch the truth but in an enlightening fashion.
12.Stop's in towns signal that an important event is about to take place.
13.Both pronounce the importance of Black Freedom.

THE PRE-WIRED BRAIN

YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ "STEPHAN PINKERS" BOOK'S
{HOW THE MIND WORKS,THE BLANK SLATE,ETC.}TO CATCH
SCIENTISTS ON TV MAKING ERRONOUS STATEMENTS ABOUT
THE NATURE OF NATURE AND THE NATURE OF
THE HUMAN MIND;BUT IT HELPS.JUST LAST NIGHT ON A SHOW ABOUT
ANIMALS,INSECTS,BIRDS AND SUCH WHO MAKE THIER OWN
CONSTRUCTIONS WITH NO PREVIOUS EXPIERIENCE; A SCIENTIST
STATEDED AT THE END HOW AMAZING THIS ABILITY IS CONSIDERING
THAT "HUMANS CAN'T DO ANYTHING WITHOUT BEING TAUGHT".
THIS IS A TOTALLY FALSE STATMENT.HUMANS MANAGE TO LEARN
A NUMBER OF HIGHTLY COMPLEX SKILLS WITHOUT BEING TAUGHT;
THE MAIN ONE BEING LANGUAGE;WHICH NO OTHER ANIMAL HAS
MASTERED WHIETHER TAUGHT OR NOT.
ONE OF THE GREATIST,IF NOT THE GREATIST SKILLS OF ANY
LIVING ORGANISM ON PLANET EARTH IS THE ABILITY OF A
GROWING HUMAN BABY TO LEARN LANGUAGE WITHOUT BEING
FORMALLY TAUGHT-BOTH SPEAKING AND UNDERSTANDING.
THE HUMAN MIND IS NOT A BLANK SLATE ! IT COMES WITH CERTAIN
INNATE ABILITY'S AND ONE OF THEM IS TO UNDERSTAND AND
SPEAK WORDS.OUR BRAINS ARE PRE-WIRED TO HAVE THIS ABILITY.
THAT BRAINS CAN LEARN TO SPEAK AND UNDERSTAND SPEECH
SIMPLY FROM BEING EXPOSED TO OTHER HUMANS DOING THE
SAME MAY BE THE MOST MIRACLOUS EVENT A HUMAN CAN WITNESS.
BUT AS 'PINKER' POINTS OUT IT'S REALLY JUST THE WAY OUR BRAINS
WORK.

RE-THINKING BOISE IDAHO

THE CITY OF BOISE,IDAHO'S NAME HAS BEEN MUCH MALIGNED OVER
THE YEARS.NOTHING AGAINST JOHNNY CARSON BUT HE IS PROBABLY
MORE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE AMERICAN PUBLIC ASSOCIATING THE
WORDS BOISE,IDAHO WITH A PLACE THAT IS BACKWARDS AND OUT
OF TOUCH WITH MODERNITY{LENO & LETTERMAN CONTINUE IT'S USE}
IT WAS THE CITY HE NAMED MOST WHEN THE JOKE CALLED FOR THE
NAME OF A "HICKTOWN" FOR IT'S PUNCHLINE AND SO PEOPLE WHO
DIDN'T KNOW BETTER THOUGHT OF BOISE IN THIS MANNER SINCE CARSON
REACHED SUCH A LARGE AUDIENCE.
THERE ARE SOME ATONISHING IRONIES WHEN ONE LOOK'S AT THE
TRUE FACTS ABOUT BOISE AND IDAHO.

1.CARSONS CAREER WAS POSSIBLE ONLY BECAUSE OF THE INVENTION
OF TV WHICH HAPPENED IN IDAHO,NOT FAR FROM BOISE BY PHILO T.
FARNSWORTH.

2.POTATO'S ARE THE NUMBER ONE SOURCE OF FOOD IN THE WORLD AND
IDAHO GROWS THE LARGEST AMOUNT.{INDEED-THE WORLD AS WE KNOW
IT COULD NOT EXIST WITHOUT POTATO'S}.

3.THE MAN WHO DESIGNED THE CHUNNEL IS A RESIDENT OF BOISE,IDAHO.
IT'S THE LARGEST AND MOST COMPLEX STRUCTURE EVER BUILT BY MAN.

4.FOR THE BETTER PART OF THE 20TH CENTURY MORRISON-KNUDSEN WAS
THE LARGEST CONSTRUCTION COMPANY IN THE WORLD AND WAS AND
STILL IS HEADQUARTERED IN BOISE;NOW UNDER THE NAME
"THE WASHINGTON GROUP".

13."FUNKY BROADWAY"-WILSON PICKETT

IF THERE IS A FUNKIER RECORD THAN "FUNKY BROADWAY" I'VE YET
TO HEAR IT.RECORDED AT FAME STUDIOS IN MUSCLE SHOALS,AL.,IT
PACKS A MIGHTY BIG SOUL SHOUT INTO IT'S BRIEF THREE MINUTE
LENGTH.THE RECORD CONTAINS WHAT MUST BE THE BIGGEST BASS
SOUND OF ANY RECORDING OF THE 60'S OR 70'S.THE MUSCLE SHOALS
HOUSE BAND WAS FAMOUS FOR THIER ABILITY TO CREATE THIS AND
MANY OTHER SOULFUL AND FUNKY SOUNDS.WILSON PICKETT IS BY
FAR THE MOST INTENSE SOUL SHOUTER OF ALL TIME-RENDERING
SCREAMS OF JOY THAT WOULD HAVE RUINED ANY OTHER SINGERS
VOCAL CHORDS.IT TRUELY WAS A MIRACLE THE WAY WILSON COULD
BLOW PEOPLE DOWN WITH HIS SCREAMS AND THEN CAUSUALLY RETURN
TO HIS INCREDIBLE SOULFUL SINGING VOICE.ONLY HE COULD DO ALL
THAT AND TAKE IT TO THE TOP TEN.

12."I HAD TO MUCH TO DREAM [LAST NIGHT]"-THE ELECTRIC PRUNES

THE QUINTISENTIAL PSYCHADELIC GARAGE BAND SONG OF THE 1960'S.
SUBSTITUTING "DREAM" FOR DRINK PLACED THE SONG IN A NEW REALM OF
INTERPRETATION THAT DID NOT EXIST PRIOR TO THE 1960'S AND HAS
SELDOM BEEN SEEN OR HEARD OF SINCE.
FOR A BRIEF MOMENT THE MINDS OF AMERICANS OPENED IN A WAY
THAT HAD PREVIOUSLY ONLY BEEN KNOWN THRU RELIGOUS EXPIERIENCE
OR BY THE SUPERNATURAL, WHICH AS ALDOUS HUXELY NOTED WAS
"JUST THE NATURAL WORLD WITHOUT ALL IT'S NAME AND LABELS.

11."THE MESSAGE"-GRANDMASTER FLASH & THE FURIOUS FIVE
"THE MESSAGE" IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SONG OF THE 1980'S.
IT HERALDED THE BEGINING OF THE RAP-HIP-HOP REVOLUTION.
AT THE TIME{1982} I WAS WALKING THE STREETS OF NEW YORK
CITY AND EVERYWHERE I WENT I'D HEAR THIS SOUND-THIS MUSIC.
I THOUGHT IT WAS IT WAS JUST A NEW YORK THING.I STARTED TO
LIKE IT.IT WAS SO FRESH.WHEN I READ THE LYRICS IN THE NEW
YORK ROCKER I WAS AMAZED.NOBODY IN ROCK WAS SAYING
ANYTHING IMPORTANT IN THIER MUSIC BUT GRANDMASTER
FLASH'S LYRICS ABOUT THE CONDITIONS IN N.Y.C. IN 1982 WERE
SPOT ON.I HAD ONLY BEEN THERE A FEW MONTHS BUT EVERYTHING
HE RAPPED ABOUT REFLECTED EXACTLY WHAT I'D SEEN AND
HEARD.NEW YORK CITY WAS STILL AN AMAZING PLACE-BUT IT
WAS IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO NOTICE THE CRIME,VIOLENCE,GIANT RAT'S,
BIGOTRY,PREJUDECE,AND CORRUPTION-WITH LITTLE ORDER AND
ALOT OF CHAOS.BLACK ARTISTS HAD TO BECOME GANGSTERS
IN ORDER TO BREAK INTO THE MUSIC BUSINESS AND THEY HAD
TO WARN PEOPLE-"DON'T PUSH ME,CAUSE I'M CLOSE TO THE EDGE".
WE ALL WERE.

TELEVISION STILL BROADCASTING

IMAGINE IF TELEVISION'S FIRST ALBUM "MARQUEE MOON" WAS THE FIRST
RECORD YOU HEARD AFTER HEARING ABOUT THIS NEW THING CALLED "PUNK
ROCK" HAPPENING IN NEW YORK CITY AT A PLACE CALLED CBGB'S.I'LL NEVER
FORGET HEARING THAT ALBUM FOR THE FIRST TIME.MY BASS PLAYER HAD IT
AND AS SOON AS I SAW IT I IMMEDIATLY SAID "PUT IT ON,I'VE READ SOME AMAZING THINGS ABOUT THIS BAND".SO HE DID AND IT WASN'T WHAT I EXPECTED BUT IT
WAS GREAT.THE SONGS WERE SMART AND THE GUITARS WERE ALL OVER THE PLACE.I HAD NEVER HEARD ANYONE PLAY GUITAR LIKE TOM VERLAINE AND I
STILL HAVEN'T TO THIS VERY DAY.
GOOD NEWS FOR TELEVISION FANS.THE BAND IS IN THE STUDIO MAKING A

6. "AUTOBAHN"-KRAFTWORK

37 YEARS AFTER IT'S RELEASE KRAFTWORK'S "AUTOBAHN" STILL SOUNDS

LIKE SOMETHING BEING BEAMED DOWN TO US FROM SOME FUTURISTIC ALIEN ASTRAL PLANE.AS FAR AS WE KNOW-KRAFTWORK WERE THE FIRST ALL ELECTRONIC ROCK BAND.THAT'S ONE THING BUT CREATING A SONG AS CATCHY AND FUN AS "AUTOBAHN" MAKES THIS RECORDING TOTALLY UNIQUE BY COMBINING THE TWO ELEMENTS.THE SONG WAS INSPIRED BY THE BEACH BOYS
"FUN,FUN,FUN" AND IF THAT WAS THE GOAL THEN KRAFTWORK DEFINATLY ACHIEVED IT.THEY SEEMED TO BE THE FIRST BAND TO TOTALLY MASTER
THE SYNTHETIC SOUNDS THIER ELECTRONIC INSTUMENTS MADE.

THE DO'S AND DON'TS OF RECORDING ACOUSTIC GUITAR

MOST ACOUSTIC GUITAR RECORDINGS ARE DONE WITH A SEPARETE MIC FOR THE

ACOUSTIC GUITAR PLACED ABOUT 5-10 INCHES FROM THE CENTER OF THE GUITAR

BODY.THOUGH SOME BASS TONE IS LEFT IN,THE TREBLE TONES ARE THE MOST

FOCUSED ON AND CRANKED-UP HIGH WITH THE MIDRANGE TURNED DOWN SO FAR

IT'S NEARLY ELIMINATED.I THINK THIS IS A BIG MISTAKE.BIG ACOUSTIC DREADNAUGHT GUITARS LIKE MY 1980 GUILD DON'T PRODUCE A THIN TREBELY SOUND LIKE YOU HEAR ON MOST MODERN RECORDS AND CD'S.THEY PRODUCE A HUGE SOUND !-IN FACT ONE MIGHT CALL IT A RUMBLE-ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE

STRUMMING HARD WITH A FAIRLY THICK LATEX PICK।THAT RUMBLE GOES BACK AT LEAST AS FAR AS THE EVERLY BROTHERS AND I'M SURE ALOT FURTHER BUT SOMETIME IN THE 1970'S PRODUCERS STARTED REMOVING ALLMOST ALL OF THE

MID-RANGE;DEEMING IT AN UNDESIRABLE SOUND.FOR SOME RECORDINGS IT IS
APPROPRIATE TO TONE DOWN THE MID-RANGE ON AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR-IF
THERE ARE ALOT OF TRACKS IT CAN MUDDY UP THE MIX।BUT IF YOUR RECORDING
A SMALL ENSEMBLE OR A GUITAR AND VOCAL ONLY RECORDING THERE'S NO
REASON NOT TO LET THE MIDRANGE FREE SO PEOPLE CAN HEAR IT IN ALL IT'S
GLORY.AT SEVERAL SESSIONS IN NASHVILLE AND AUSTIN I INSTRUCTED THE
ENGINEER TO LEAVE THE MID-RANGE IN ! I KNOW THEY WERE BOTH SURPRISED
AND DELIGHTED AT THE SOUND WE GOT।
